How to Repair a Dead Car Key
Sometimes extreme cold or heat can cause the car key to stop working properly. It is best to wait a few minutes before you spend money to replace it.
If your car keys get damaged it can be a major hassle. It always occurs at the most inconvenient moment! There are a few ways you can repair broken car keys that don't involve paying for the purchase of a new key.
Dead Key Fob Batteries
Modern key fobs let us open doors, trunks, and tailgates without the need for a physical car key. Some key fobs even have an inbuilt key that can be used to start our cars. However, these fobs depend on a small battery that is the power source for their remote functions. If the battery dies then the key fob will not be able to transmit the signal needed to turn on the vehicle. Fortunately, there are many ways you can fix a dead key fob and get your car operating again.
First, check whether the key fob really dead. If it seems to be dead, you'll require replacing the batteries. You can do this yourself by taking the key fob away from its clip or using a small flat-head screwdriver to remove it. Do not apply too much force, or it could cause damage to the fob. You should also make sure that you're using the right type of battery. Certain models may require a different battery. Broken Key Ring
The key fob's internal chip is what communicates with your car's immobilizer system to start the engine. The chip could be damaged or there might be programming mistakes. Broken Key Loop
One of my MK5 keyfobs has snapped off the little key loop on top of the loop where it joins the keyfob. Apparently it's made out of extremely soft plastic or metal. I've made a hole, then wet-sanded it to make it more durable. But I'm guessing that's not helping.
I've also wrapped the broken portion of the ring with clear tape, but that does not seem to do any good. This is a pity, as I rely on the small split rings to keep my keys in place.
If the case for the key fob is damaged It's usually possible to open up the case and replace the battery (assuming the battery isn't dead). Online kits are available however they're only a temporary solution. It is more efficient to have it repaired by a professional. You can also purchase a new case at a locksmith or home improvement store. These cases aren't as expensive as an entirely new key fob.
